Eurovision 2009 ~ Flash Back ~ Did Fairytale Deserve To Win?

In 2009, Norway thrived in the Eurovision Contest, scoring the HIGHEST ever score received in a contest, beating the previous record set by Lordi in 2006 (Finland). Lordi got a very respectable 292, coming first, beating 2nd place by 44 points. (2nd is Eurovision's very own Dima Bilan!) However, this record was to be beat by Alexander Rybak. Rybak received a giant 387 points, beating Lordi's record by 95 points. However, Rybak, to date, hasn't received the most 12 points, Loreen, the winner of 2012, currently holds that record.

But did Fairytale win because the song also good enough to win was held back through politics?

People seem to say, 'Although "Fairytale" was a good song, I think "Nor Par (Jan Jan)" by Inga and Anush - Armenia's entry that year - may have deserved to win a little more.'
Any Eurovision fan would know Armenia have never won and it looks bleak for them in the future. But there was a year when they were a fan favourite. You know what year I'm talking about, don't you? Yes, 2009, of course! The song was a fusion between traditional dance music and dance-pop and worked greatly. Inga and Anush are possibly the best duo act ever in the Eurovision. Their dancing was in sync, their vocals were in sync and their vocals fused together greatly. Not to mention the song, it was a catchy tune that even a ballet dancer could get up and dance to. It was one of those songs that you instantly think, "This is getting my vote." And indeed, I voted for Armenia.

Unfortunately, Armenia finished 10th, only scoring 92 points (harsh, right? For such a good song). Now, we already know Azerbaijan refused to show Armenia's entry due to an on going conflict, so Armenia failed to receive points from Azerbaijan. Because of this, Armenia also failed to receive good points from countries with a good relationship with Azerbaijan, to highlight some: Ukraine, Turkey and Russia. Also, Armenia's good score in the previous Eurovision contributed to the lack of points. If Armenia hadn't done so well the year before, they would've raked in the points. So, did politics stop Armenia from winning, did the juries just dislike the song, because, for sure, it wasn't the Eurovision Fans' faults, as it was a favourite. Rybak may be widely loved in the Eurovision community, but so is Inga and Anush. Maybe they'll return in 2015 to prove the juries wrong?
