A 2013 Underrated Song: ESDM - Contigo Hasta El Final - review

Instead of reviewing all the songs people love, I will review underrated songs. My first is ESDM - Contigo Hasta El Final.

El sueño de Morfeo.JPGContigo Hasta El Final was composed and performed by the Spanish band (yes, it was Spain's entry) ESDM (El Sueño de Morfeo - Morpheus' Dream).

Because being part of the "Big 5" - the 5 countries who contribute the most to the EBU - it did not have to qualify for the final, it automatically got placed in. At the Grand Final, it was song 5, definitely too early in the running order to win, but it could try and fare well within the top 10. In the end, the song finished 25th, with 8 points, also 2nd-to-last.

I felt this unfair. I really liked the song, it was an interesting fusion between pop, folk and rock music and it worked; it was a great fusion that worked brilliantly. Obviously, the rest of Europe did not think so.

Anyway, let's get on with the review:

Vocals: Vocal wise, I think Raquel was on key, displaying what great vocals she has, her soft vocals really made the song what it was. If it were Lordi (hard rock band, winner of the Eurovision 2006 for Finland) performing that song, it would not have been what it was. In total, I'd give Raquel a 8/10.

Song: The song itself was amazing, I feel. The traditional bagpipes used, the lyrics, how the drum starts soft and throughout the song, gets heavier, it was a really well composed piece. The guitars were heavily heard, too, and that also made the song sound better. The lyrics were touching - yes, I understand Spanish - and they really spoke to me. I'd give the song itself 10/10.

Staging: The staging was simple; Raquel, her band members and some instruments in the background. Towards the end, Raquel went to the middle of the stage and set off a trigger or lanterns floating in mid air at Malmö. And there was a wind machine, as well. The simple staging worked for such a simple but touching song. Staging would get a 9/10.

Overall rating: Now I'll average out the scores given and give you an average I think the whole performance gets. 9/10. Rating it as: a must listen to, a great song.
